In Memoriam: Steven Lewis Smith, CGA

Stephen L. Smith, CGARecently, the American Gem Society lost longtime member, Steven L. Smith, CGA.

Steven and his wife of 46 years, Kathy Smith, CGA, were third-generation jewelers. Together they ran S. O. Hawkes and Son in Yakima, WA, along with Kathy’s father, Wright Hawkes, CGA. They were IRS expert witnesses in matters related to jewelry.

They were regular Conclave attendees and Kathy was on the AGS Board of Directors for a number of years.

Steven was active in Rotary and acted as president for the Yakima Credit Bureau and the Association for Community Living. He loved the University of Arizona, the Beach Boys, a good Mai Tai, and always had a smile for everyone he met.

AGS Laboratories, founded to support the AGS mission, is a nonprofit diamond grading laboratory with a mission of consumer protection. Adhering to the AGS Diamond Grading Standards, AGS Laboratories is dedicated to offering diamond grading reports that provide consistency and accuracy based on science.
