Under the Scope: What Makes a Brown Diamond, Brown?

The brown color in these diamonds is a testament that the journey to the surface is not one that is easy or free of structural changing forces; stresses that can actually move atoms in the crystal structure. The American Gem Society presented several prestigious awards during Conclave in Dallas, Texas, September 12–14. On September 12, during the Morning Breakfast Keynote, Marc Altman, CGA, Chair of the International Guilds Council, presented three awards, the John J. Dr. James Shigley Receives the 2021 Robert M. Shipley Award®

Dr. James Shigley of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the recipient of the American Gem Society’s (AGS) most prestigious honor, the Robert M. Shipley Award®. Dr. Shigley was awarded the honor based on his commitment to the jewelry industry and because of his decades of friendship and service toward the Society. Bill Farmer, Senior Advisor to the AGS International Board of Directors and current chair of the Robert M. GIA and AGS Award 2nd Annual Beatrice Shipley Scholarship to Ohio Jeweler

The second annual Beatrice Shipley Scholarship—created by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the American Gem Society (AGS) in 2019—was awarded to Rachel Burazer, a sales associate and custom designer at Argo & Lehne Jewelers in Columbus, Ohio. The scholarship will cover complete tuition for the GIA Graduate Gemologist on-campus program in Carlsbad, California, along with the costs of the AGS Way Course and entry to the 2021 AGS Conclave event in Dallas, Texas, September 12–14.
