Sustaining Firm Spotlight: Gemist

Founded by Madeline Fraser, Gemist is at the forefront of technological innovation in the jewelry industry. With a clear mission to revolutionize fine jewelry shopping experiences, Gemist provides advanced customization and visualization tools that cater to the specific needs of brands and retailers.

With an omnichannel approach, Gemist’s Customization Experiences help jewelers meaningfully scale the custom side of their businesses and increase customer engagement and loyalty, resulting in 4x faster sales cycles.

The inception of Gemist is rooted in Fraser’s personal challenges. “For the last 10+ years, I have created and grown three technology companies,” says Fraser. “The initial idea sparked for Gemist from my personal experience in designing an engagement ring online. I was shocked to find that the technology was clunky, unresponsive, and didn’t allow me to visualize what my customized ring design would look like. I realized there was a huge gap in the market and decided to build a company that would ease the pain points of shopping for jewelry.”

Launched in 2020, Gemist started as a direct-to-consumer (D2C) customizable jewelry platform. Through extensive user testing, Gemist quickly proved its worth, showing incredible results such as 5x engagement, 2x consumer loyalty, 3x average order values, and 2x conversion rates compared to industry standards. As the company grew, Fraser realized that Gemist had the potential to make an even bigger impact by offering its technology as a business-to-business (B2B) solution.

Gemist differentiates itself through a suite of innovative features designed to elevate the jewelry shopping experience. “It’s not easy to build a business model that offers an excellent in-store and online experience,” Fraser explains. “Gemist is solving this problem with verticalized software solutions that help the jewelry industry diversify sales channels, see growth, and run more efficiently.”

Some highlights of Gemist’s offerings include the “Design Your Own” jewelry experience, a curated live inventory of loose diamonds and gemstones, and the ability to see and feel replica pieces at home or in-store before purchase. Additionally, Gemist’s technology can be fully white-labeled and integrated into any brand or retailer’s existing model, ensuring brand integrity and an authentic portrayal of each piece of jewelry.

One of Gemist’s most revolutionary approaches is its “no inventory” philosophy, which allows collections to be created and scaled with advanced photorealistic renders, reducing the need for finished inventory. This approach not only reduces costs but also enhances the flexibility and responsiveness of jewelry brands and retailers.

Fraser is particularly excited about Gemist’s new B2B model. “We are now licensing our data-backed and proven technology to the jewelry industry,” she announces. “Our technology creates interactive omnichannel user experiences that bridge the gap between online and in-store sales channels, ultimately driving higher engagement, consumer loyalty, and conversion rates.”

While Fraser is deeply committed to building Gemist, she also has a passion for farming and art. She and her husband live in California’s Ojai Valley, where they’ve built a five-acre market farm. “Our goal was to create a place where we could start to become self-sufficient,” Fraser shares. “We harvest organic fruits and vegetables, have a small vineyard for wine, beehives for honey, and dairy goats for milk. We’re also both artists and love to take time for painting and sculpture.”

For Fraser, the most satisfying aspect of her role with Gemist is being a passionate problem solver. “The best part of my job is learning from our customers and helping them solve pain points they never knew had solutions,” she says. “We’re just at the tip of the iceberg in terms of what we’ll continue to solve for, and I’m excited to keep building innovative technology that makes an impact within the jewelry industry.”

As a member of the American Gem Society (AGS), Fraser values the community and connection to forward-thinking companies that prioritize education and exceptional customer service. “AGS’s mission aligns perfectly with Gemist’s core values,” she concludes.
