Diamonds symbolize the romance and promise of eternal love, and we never tire of watching the heart-tugging marriage proposals immortalized in some of our favorite films. Following are some of the most romantic, funny and charming movie proposals of all time.

Gone With the Wind
Passionately persistent, Rhett Butler's proposals are repeatedly rebuffed by feisty Scarlett O’Hara in this epic Civil War film. Finally, sweeping into Scarlett’s home after she’s widowed for the second time, he utters the immortal words “I can’t spend the rest of my life waiting to catch you between husbands”.

When Harry Met Sally
This iconic romantic comedy poses the eternal question: Can men and women really just be friends? The movie’s New Year’s Eve marriage proposal is perfect, if non-traditional, as Harry declares, “When you find the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”

Love Actually
Ah, the charm of a foreign-language proposal. In Love Actually, Colin Firth’s Jamie Bennet falls so passionately in love with his Portuguese housekeeper that he learns her native language just well enough to ask her to “marriage” him in front of her entire family and a restaurant full of neighbors.

Pride and Prejudice
What can match the windswept moors for a romantic proposal backdrop? Matthew Macfadyen’s swoon-worthy Mr. Darcy steps out of the mist to declare that Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Bennet has bewitched him, “body and soul,” and he wishes to never be parted from her.

Stepmom features an unusual proposal as Ed Harris pops the question via a spool of thread. Puzzled, his smiling young love Julia Roberts follows the unspooling twine until a glittering diamond ring slides onto her finger.

Love Story
Passionate, tragic and occasionally funny, Love Story is one of the most iconic movies of all time, offering teary movie-goers a beautiful, dying young bride. Ryan O’Neal’s reason for wanting to marry doomed Ali McGraw: Just “because.” And isn't that enough?

Four Weddings and a Funeral
This  British romantic comedy stars the perennially charming Hugh Grant as a somewhat clumsily debonair Brit infatuated with pretty American, Andie McDowell. They run into each other repeatedly at the title's memorable events until he finally pops the question in a downpour.

The Wedding Singer
Though not strictly speaking a proposal, this movie’s climactic scene between Adam Sandler’s sad-sack wedding singer, Robbie Hart, and Drew Barrymore’s kind-hearted waitress, is pitch perfect. Robbie determinedly invades the plane carrying his true love and her unpleasant intended, and woos her back with a song he's written for her.

Walk the Line
Walk the Line offers up the fiery, passionate romance of Johnny Cash and June Carter. In the unusual proposal scene, Johnny invites June up on stage to sing a duet of “Jackson,” and his ulterior motive is soon obvious when he refuses to finish the song until she consents to marry him.

The Proposal
Charming rom-com The Proposal features a sweet and funny marriage proposal capping an unusual business arrangement. Ryan Reynolds’ off-beat proposal, “Marry me because I’d like to date you,” scores big for charm and originality.
