Certified Gemologist® Appraiser

This credential is intended for individuals who can identify diamonds, gemstones, and jewelry and determine their value. Certified Gemologist® Appraiser (CGA) credentialed members possess advanced knowledge, training, and experience in determining the value of diamonds, gemstones, and jewelry. The CGA credential is highly regarded among peers in the jewelry industry.

The CGA credential applicant must:

  • Be a Certified Gemologist® currently employed at an AGS member business
  • Successfully complete foundational appraisal education from an approved source
  • Successfully complete the CGA theory exam and the CGA practical appraisal report writing exam
  • Agree to the use of the AGS Appraisal Standards for all appraisals unless using the standards of another approved organization in which the individual is an active member
  • Complete a color vision test, and strongly consider re-taking the color vision screening after age 55, or if the individual experiences any medical changes

Applicants who receive the CGA credential must do the following to maintain the credential:

  • Successfully pass the annual AGS recertification exam and pay applicable fees
  • Submit a current appraisal report for review by the Appraisal Standards Subcommittee upon request
