Examples of Qualifying Prerequisite Education for the Certified Gemologist Appraiser Application

The following list provides examples of qualifying education that will satisfy the prerequisite requirements for the Certified Gemologist Appraiser. Listed here are the appraisal organizations, the minimum education required from those organizations, and additional options. This list is not exhaustive, and other appraisal education may be considered. American Society of Appraisers (ASA)

  • Completion of Gems & Jewelry (GJ) Principles of Valuation (GJ201 & GJ202) or
  • One of the following membership levels (requires ASA membership):
    • Accredited Member (AM)
    • Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA)
    • Master Gemologist Appraiser® (MGA)

Appraisal Course Associates (ACA)

  • Certificate of completing the book, course, and feedback appraisals with certificate

Appraisers Association of America (AAA)

  • Certificate in Appraisal Studies from the Appraisal Institute of America, which requires completion of the Comprehensive Appraisal Studies Program (CASP) or
  • One of the following membership levels (requires AAA membership):
    • Associate Candidate
    • Accredited Member
    • Life Accredited Member
    • Certified Member
    • Life Certified Member

Appraisers International Society™ (AiS/AiSociety)

  • AiCore Appraisal Fundamentals™ Program including AiCore I™ & AiCore II™ or
  • One of the following levels, which can be earned with or without membership:
    • AiSociety Accredited International Valuer or Member (AiS-AiV) or
    • AiSociety Senior International Valuer or Member (AiSV-AiV) or
    • AiSociety Advanced Valuation Specialist & Trial Expert or Member (AiSCV-AVS) or
    • AiSociety Certified International Valuer with Gems & Jewelry AiSpecialty Designation or Member (AiSCV-GJV AiV) or
    • AiSociety Certified Advanced Valuation Specialist with Gems & Jewelry AiSpecialty Designation or Member (AiSCV AVS-GJV AiV)

International Society of Appraisers (ISA)

  • Evidence of completion of the ISA Core Course in Appraisal Studies or
  • One of the following membership levels (requires ISA membership):
    • Member (ISA) or
    • Accredited Member (ISA AM)
    • Certified Member (ISA CAPP)

 National Association of Jewelry Appraisers (NAJA)

  • NAJA Appraisal Studies Course Lessons 1-5 Appraisal Theory and Methodology (requires membership) or
  • One of the following membership levels (requires NAJA membership):
    • Certified Member (CM)
    • Certified Senior Member (CSM)
    • Certified Master Appraiser (CMA)

IMPORTANT: The Non-Designation Continuing Education Course does not have exams or assignments; therefore, it does not qualify.
