Jewels of the 2013 Emmy’s

By Lisa Bridge, Certified Gemologist, Ben Bridge

The Emmys are an exciting night for television, but the fashion and jewelry worlds get to play along too. All in all the stars made good choices in their jewelry.

I was surprised by the number of celebrity comments on how nervous they were wearing their jewelry on the red carpet. While there were some very expensive pieces, aren’t these the people we consider our American royalty? Shouldn’t they know how to wear jewelry? Also, isn’t the number one rule of the red carpet to look confident (whether you feel that way or not)?

In spite of some insecurities, there were some great jewelry moments. A few of my favorites were:

*Anna Faris’ lizard brooch worn on the back of her dress. The yellow dress and the green, demantoid lizard were stunning together. The insouciant lizard made the beautiful dress into something quite special. It was unique, charming, and memorable. What more could you want from the red carpet?Anna_Faris_Lizard_Brooch

*I loved the stars who embraced yellow gold at the Emmys. Many of us have anxiously been awaiting its return and by the look of the red carpet, there is definite progress. Padma Lakshmi went “all in” on yellow gold. With an architectural bracelet that took up much of her arm, the statement was a perfect complement to her structured white gown.

*Quite a few women wore big colored gemstone rings. Between the emerald rings on Mayim Bialik and Sofia Vergara (whose ring was 40 carats) and Zooey Deschanel’s tourmaline ring, I couldn’t stop looking at everyone’s hands!

*Men are often left out of the bejeweled fun of awards shows, but thankfully last night a few joined the party. George Katsiopoulos of E! News wore a cluster of Forevermark diamonds on his lapel. It was just the right extra touch, both classy and visually interesting.

Happily there are many more award shows to look forward to and hopefully impressive jewelry to go along with them.
