The AGS community mourns the recent loss of two valued members, Thomas “Tom” Wright, ECGA, and William “Kelly” Newton, ECGA.
Thomas "Tom" Wright, ECGA

Thomas “Tom” Wright, ECGA, a beloved jeweler, dedicated community member, and lifelong Nebraskan, passed away on December 18, 2024, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Surrounded by family in his final moments, Tom leaves behind a legacy of artistry, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to both his profession and the people he cherished.
Born in 1946 in Deshler, Nebraska, Tom grew up with a passion for craftsmanship. After graduating from Hebron High School, he embarked on a career in the jewelry industry, where he would leave an indelible mark. With a meticulous eye for detail and a deep appreciation for design, Tom became not just a jeweler but a creator of lasting beauty. His “Ribbons of Gold” designs, cherished by customers, reflected his true passion—crafting the perfect piece of jewelry for each individual.
He was a distinguished Emeritus Certified Gemologist® Appraiser with the American Gem Society (AGS) and proudly served on the AGS International Board of Directors for 11 years. Tom was equally committed to the industry at a local level, serving as President of the Nebraska/South Dakota Jewelers Association. His designs won numerous state and national awards, a testament to his artistry and innovation.
“Tom will be missed greatly,” said Katherine Bodoh, RJ, CEO of the American Gem Society, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Mary, and his family, friends, and the entire AGS community as we honor his remarkable life and legacy.”
Beyond his profession, Tom was deeply engaged in his community. He contributed his time and leadership to organizations such as the Lincoln Independent Business Association (LIBA) and the Downtown Board of Directors, among others. Whether advocating for local businesses or strengthening community ties, he believed in making a difference.
Yet, for all his professional success, Tom was just as well-known for his love of life. An avid golfer and hunter, he also found joy in painting, fishing, and the occasional game of Keno. His best moments were spent in the company of family and friends, sharing laughter and stories. His ability to bring people together and make every moment feel like a celebration was one of his greatest gifts.
In addition to his wife Mary, Tom is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Heather, and his four grandchildren, Palmer, Tenley, Hogan, and Nicklaus.
Tom’s legacy lives on not only in the jewelry he designed but also in the laughter, friendships, and memories he helped create.
William "Kelly" Newton, ECGA

Kelly Newton, ECGA, who sat on the AGS International Board of Directors from 2010–2020 and was a former chair of the American Gem Society’s (AGS) Membership Committee, passed away on December 29, 2024.
Born in Fort Smith, Arkansas, Kelly studied business management at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. After graduating in 1972, he returned home and joined the family jewelry business, Newton’s Jewelers, which was founded in the early 1940s by Kelly’s father, second-generation jeweler William W. Newton. Following his father’s passing in 2001, Kelly took the helm, leading the business with passion and integrity until his retirement in 2023, when he and his family made the decision to close the store.
Newton’s Jewelers was a proud member of the American Gem Society, and Kelly was a highly respected Emeritus Certified Gemologist® Appraiser. In 2019, Kelly received the Society’s Robert M. Shipley Award® in recognition of his unwavering commitment to AGS, the jewelry industry, and his community.
“Kelly was a cherished member of the American Gem Society for 30 years,” Ms. Bodoh reflects. “He exemplified the values of professionalism and service. Kelly’s legacy of commitment to AGS, the jewelry industry, and his community will be fondly remembered.”
Beyond his professional achievements, Kelly was known for his warmth, generosity, and willingness to share his knowledge. Outside his work, Kelly found joy in music, singing in his church’s chancel choir and the Fort Smith Chorale. He also loved golfing, fishing with friends, and, most of all, being “K-dad” to his four grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; daughters Sara Lane (Chad), Jennifer Norman (Josh), and Lucy Lundy (Michael); grandchildren Carson Newton Lane, Lillian Elizabeth Norman, William Webb Norman, and Sara Kathryn Lane; step-grandchildren Emily and Kristopher Lundy; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Louanna and Jack Green; nephews Kevin Newton (Lisa), Jeffrey Green (Maria), and Hayden Green; and niece Courtenay Decker (Bill).
Kelly will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the jewelry industry, but his legacy of business excellence, kindness, and volunteerism will endure.
