Universal Deco was founded as an extension of Fernanda Durmer’s lifelong passion for art, craftsmanship, and storytelling. As an immigrant from Costa Rica, she has always viewed art as a bridge between history, culture, and personal legacy. Her creative journey began with fine pen artwork, gold leaf, and acrylic paint—mediums that allowed her to explore intricate details and symbolism. Over time, this artistic expression naturally evolved into jewelry design.
“A pivotal milestone came in 2021 when I established Universal Deco as a recognized fine jewelry brand in Denver, dedicated to crafting one-of-a-kind pieces with sustainably sourced materials,” Fernanda shares. Another defining moment came with an exhibition in Paris, where one of Universal Deco’s sapphire rings was featured in Forbes as a “must-see” piece. These achievements reinforced her mission: creating visually striking jewelry with intention, history, and enduring artistry.
Universal Deco was born from Fernanda’s deep curiosity about indigenous history and traditions. Though she immigrated to the United States as a child, her early years in Costa Rica left a lasting imprint. She was surrounded by cultural narratives, intricate symbolism, and craftsmanship that carried the stories of generations before her.
“The moment I carved my first ring and saw it transformed into gold, I knew I had found my calling,” Fernanda explains. “I had spent my life searching for that thing; the medium that would allow me to fully express myself—and I finally discovered it in jewelry.”
Jewelry-making became more than just a craft; it became a language, a way to honor history while creating something deeply personal and timeless. This philosophy shapes every aspect of Universal Deco. The brand is committed to sustainability, using only SCS-certified 100% recycled metals and collaborating with trusted stone dealers who share their values of ethical sourcing and origin tracing.
“But beyond materials, our approach is rooted in a deeper purpose,” she says. “Jewelry is not just an adornment; it is a bridge between past and present, a modern heirloom that serves as a token of empowerment, protection, and connection.”
At Universal Deco, the customer experience is guided by four core values: trust, authenticity, kindness, and communication. Fernanda recognizes that jewelry is deeply personal, often marking life’s most meaningful moments. That’s why she ensures that each creation is a true reflection of the wearer’s journey.
This year has been a rewarding one for Universal Deco. Fernanda was recently appointed president of her local jewelry association, a role she is excited to take on as she fosters mentorship, inclusivity, and collaboration within the industry. Additionally, Universal Deco has been featured in National Jeweler and JCK Magazine, further cementing its reputation in the fine jewelry space.
The brand is also expanding its Línea Sagrada collection, inspired by ceremonial artifacts from Central America. Each piece in the collection carries symbolic energy, offering wearers a connection to history, spirituality, and craftsmanship.
For Universal Deco, being a member of the American Gem Society is about more than just access to industry resources—it’s about being part of a network of professionals who share a commitment to integrity, education, and ethical business practices.
“Since joining, I’ve already made so many meaningful connections, and I know these relationships will continue to shape and inspire my journey,” Fernanda says. “For Universal Deco, where trust and sustainability are core principles, AGS membership reinforces our commitment to excellence and keeps us connected to the leaders driving positive change in the industry.”
