The American Gem Society (AGS) has updated the requirements for earning the Certified Gemologist® Appraiser (CGA) credential, introducing a new educational pathway designed to ensure applicants have a strong foundation in appraisal principles before advancing through the certification process.
The most significant change involves the education requirement. Previously, AGS provided the required appraisal education through its Appraisals I & II course. Under the new structure, applicants must first complete foundational appraisal education through an approved external education provider. This prerequisite education must be verified before candidates can move forward in the certification process.
After eligibility verification and payment of the exam fee, qualified applicants enroll in the online CGA theory exam. Candidates who successfully pass the theory exam will then complete the practical portion of the credentialing process by writing appraisal reports for review and evaluation.
Requirements for the CGA Credential
To qualify for the Certified Gemologist Appraiser credential, applicants must:
- Be a Certified Gemologist® currently employed at an AGS member business.
- Successfully complete foundational appraisal education from an approved source.
- Successfully complete both the CGA theory examination and the CGA practical appraisal report-writing examination.
- Agree to use the AGS Appraisal and Report Standards for all appraisals, unless using the standards of another approved organization in which the individual maintains active membership.
- Complete a color vision test and strongly consider repeating the screening after age 55 or following any medical changes that could affect color perception.
Maintaining the Credential
CGA credential holders must continue to demonstrate their knowledge and professional competency through ongoing recertification requirements. To maintain the credential, members must:
- Successfully pass the annual AGS recertification examination and pay applicable fees.
- Submit a current appraisal report for review by the Appraisal Standards Subcommittee upon request.
These ongoing requirements help ensure that credentialed appraisers remain current with industry standards and continue to produce high-quality, professional appraisal reports.
