Black and Gold: A Striking Duo

By Kristen Taylor Young

For centuries, gold (signifying wealth) and black (representing power and prestige) have been worn by royals and aristocrats. Recently, the demand and supply of black-and-gold jewelry has shifted into high gear, driven by celebrities, the fashion cognoscenti, and jewelry designers’ penchant for the strong look. Onyx, black jade, black diamonds in oversized cocktail rings, black enamel brooches, oxidized silver (which appears black), gold bands, cuffs, and earrings make a strong statement for fall.

Lika Behar has fashioned an entire collection in black and gold. Called Yin and Yang, the collection is “our richest and wildest collection” and “takes inspiration from the duality of the entire world and its cultures, where the ancient and modern live eternally in a state of harmony or cacophony.” Behar takes sterling/oxidized silver and pure 24k gold, some adorned with diamonds and gemstones, and hammers and molds them into pieces meant to be worn daily.

Look at these bold and beautiful designs by American Gem Society (AGS) members that showcase the striking black and gold combo.
