Laboratory-grown diamonds that carry a report by the AGS Laboratories will have an “LG” in their color or clarity grade that differentiates it as a laboratory-grown diamond.

How much are laboratory-grown diamonds?

Like natural diamonds, laboratory-grown diamonds range in price. There are not set prices for laboratory-grown diamonds.

Are laboratory-grown diamonds really diamonds?

Diamonds formed in the Earth are called “natural diamonds” because their growth occurred over the span of billions of years under the surface of the Earth. Laboratory-grown diamonds carry almost identical characteristics optically, chemically, and physically as natural diamonds, but were grown in high-tech facilities. The scientific definition of diamond is pure carbon crystallized in the isometric system. Both natural and laboratory-grown diamonds are diamonds.

How can you tell the difference between natural and laboratory-grown diamonds?

In most cases, it requires expert gemologists with high-tech equipment following specific testing protocols to tell natural and laboratory-grown diamonds apart. It takes a lot of training, experience, and knowledge of diamond growth, chemistry, and optical properties to make a conclusive determination.

How are laboratory-grown diamonds made?

Laboratory-grown diamonds are created in a high-tech facility with a highly-controlled and researched process. They’re most commonly made in two ways: high pressure high temperature (HPHT) press or chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Learn more about the difference between those two processes here.
