GIA Lab Classes

Gemological Institute of America (GIA), in recognition of its shared history with the American Gem Society (AGS), and as part of its mission, is sponsoring the Diamond Grading and Gem Identification lab sessions to be offered at the AGS Headquarters in Las Vegas. To apply to participate, scroll down to complete the application form. Please note that applying to attend does not guarantee enrollment, and participation will be confirmed per the listed deadlines.

 

Spring Classes

Forms must be completed by January 30, 2020. Participants will be confirmed and notified by February 3, 2020.

Five-Day Diamond Grading Lab
Monday, March 16, 2020 - Friday, March 20, 2020
9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day

During this lab, you will learn how to grade diamonds using a gem microscope and jeweler’s loupe, how to master the diamond grading system, discover time-saving shortcuts to determine a variety of grading factors, and how to read a diamond grading report. You will also have the opportunity to practice diamond grading techniques.

Gem Identification Lab
Monday, March 23, 2020 - Friday, March 27, 2020
9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day

Gain confidence with gem identification while using such tools as a microscope, a refractometer with polarizing filter and a removable magnifying eyepiece, refractive index (RI) liquid, a polariscope, a dichroscope, a spectroscope, and a loupe. You'll learn how to identify natural gemstones, imitations, and synthetics, as well as discover effective testing procedures for colored stones that are now in circulation.

Colored Stone Grading Lab
Wednesday, October 7, 2020 - Friday, October 9, 2020
9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day

Acquire the skills you need in order to determine the color, clarity, and cut for a range of colored stones. Learn GIA’s Colored Stone Grading System and how to describe color by hue, tone, and saturation. Increase the consistency and accuracy of your colored stone grading skills, how to judge clarity and cut quality, and learn the relationship between light and color. At the end of this lab class, you will earn a letter of completion.

9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day

AGS Laboratories, founded to support the AGS mission, is a nonprofit diamond grading laboratory with a mission of consumer protection. Adhering to the AGS Diamond Grading Standards, AGS Laboratories is dedicated to offering diamond grading reports that provide consistency and accuracy based on science.
