Think Outside the Box with These Three Sessions
Monday, January 29, 2018
In this month’s Conclave eNews, we are spotlighting three sessions that could change your way of thinking when it comes to making choices as a business owner. The first will help you build strong business relationships, the second will give you a fresh perspective on managing your employees with confidence, and the third may give you a new appreciation for two versatile, yet misunderstood, gemstones.
Monday, April 23 / 10:15 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.
Win-Win Together: AGS Retailer and AGS Supplier Panel
Niveet Nagpal, Omi Gems, and Mary Todd-McGinnis, CGA, Ben Bridge Jeweler
John Carter, CGA, Jack Lewis Jewelers, and Mark Schneider, RS, Mark Schneider Designs
In the past, conventional wisdom said that multiple vendors increased competition and enhanced performance; that playing one supplier against another was good business. Today, creating a win-win ecosystem replaces the traditional “us versus them” mentality with a new “us” that enables business to grow for both suppliers and retailers. In win-win relationships, everyone does their utmost to understand their partner’s needs and to satisfy them. These AGS suppliers and retailers will share their insights about winning together.
John and Mark will talk about their journey from buyer and seller to trusted friends and partners. Their relationship was not developed for a single purpose, but for the long haul. This has meant helping each other in ways that are tangential to the relationship.
Niveet and Mary know good relationships in business don’t just happen. They will discuss the cultural business fit and personal investment required to grow an authentic win-win partnership.
Wednesday, April 25 / 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.
Management 101.5 – Managing Effectively, Efficiently and With Confidence
Presenter: Joshua Pruschen, CG, Maxon’s Diamond Merchants
This session is for the young jewelry professional who is destined to be a manager, or a store owner weary about hiring a Millennial as a manager. Building on the basic foundations of management, this session will discuss the new Millennial ways of effective management. Why should we change what’s been working? Simply put, times have changed! The Millennial manager will be the best manager you have ever had, if properly guided and understood. We will talk about how to manage employees, inventory, technology implementation/adaption, and basic store operations with efficiency, effectiveness, and confidence.
Wednesday, April 25 / 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Tourmaline & Garnet
Presenter: Edward Boehm, CG, RareSource
Tourmalines and garnets have adorned historical jewelry and religious regalia for centuries and today both are enjoying a renaissance among jewelry designers. The tourmaline and garnet groups represent the most versatile yet often misunderstood and underappreciated gems. Identifying rough and its potential yield at the source can sometimes be tricky but can be overcome by applying a few simple key tests.
Because of increased demand and higher prices, new sources have been sought and many old sources have seen a revival in production providing much needed supply to meet the growing demand. Sources, minerals, and gems featured in this presentation will include those from California, Brazil, Burma, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Russia, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania.
