Retailer Spotlight: Malak Jewelers

As a young boy growing up in Southern Egypt, Asaad Malak began learning the jewelry business from his father in his family's jewelry business; it was at this time that he became passionate about offering a quality product at the best price to his customer. At the age of 14, Asaad opened his first business with the idea of crafting and designing crosses and other religious symbols.
In 1980, Mr. Malak moved to New York where he worked in New York's Diamond District and opened his first retail jewelry store. As an importer, manufacturer, and expert in the industry, the most important lesson he learned was that the most exceptional engagement rings begin with a high-quality diamond.
In 1996, Mr. Malak and his family relocated to Charlotte, NC and opened his first store in the Arboretum in South Charlotte. Over the years, Mr. Malak has seen Malak Jewelers grow into one of the Southeast's largest direct diamond importers, importing to their Charlotte showroom from diamond cutters in Tel Aviv, Israel, and Antwerp, Belgium.
Spectra Update had a chance to learn more about Malak Jewelers and what makes their store stand out.
What does Malak Jewelers' specialize in?
We specialize in diamonds, more specifically, educating our customers about diamonds so they are able to appreciate them and understand their beauty. We allow our customers to decide on their own; we do not use pushy sales tactics, which is why we see ourselves as advisors, not salespeople.
What are some of the things you do in store to make the shopping experience comfortable and memorable?
We make sure our store has a pleasant smell. We like to try different scents from time to time, like cinnamon apple, lavender, French vanilla, and various berry or herbal scents. We often get compliments from our customers about how good our store smells! We also play light and romantic music, nothing too drastic. After 2:00 p.m., we serve Italian wine. We combine these three factors, along with a visually appealing store, and make sure every customer has the best experience when buying jewelry.
You are actively involved with the community. Can you tell us how you give back?
We contribute to several charities and churches throughout the year. However, our biggest contribution comes from the two largest events of the year, where we team up with a charity and host an event at our store. We provide the drinks, hors d'oeuvres, and donate a few items valued at $1,000-$3,000 each to raffle. A percentage of the sales of the day, along with all the money gathered through the raffle, go to our charity partner. Recently we’ve teamed up with Toys for Tots, Susan G. Komen®, Go Red for Women®, HeartBright Foundation, and many others.
How has being a member of the American Gem Society helped Malak Jewelers and what advice do you have for new members?
We recognize the prestige that comes with being an AGS member. Our beliefs as a company align perfectly with AGS’s and we think it's an imperative part of our branding strategy.
Make sure you read everything AGS sends, especially policies that you need to follow in order to keep your membership! They also help keep us updated on changing trends. When you do become a member, be sure to announce your membership to as many advertising channels as possible. The press release provided by AGS announcing our membership acceptance was very useful; make sure you feed the press!
