Brenda Harwick is a member of the Gemological Institute of America's (GIA) highly respected team of instructors who impart over 75 years of the Institute's knowledge and research to gem and jewelry professionals throughout the nation.
A specialist in both the theory and practice of diamond grading, colored stone grading, and gem identification, Brenda’s expertise is drawn from a pool of retail experience and formal gemological education.
From 1984 to 1989, Brenda was a sales consultant at Doreen’s Diamonds and Fine Jewelry in Jefferson, Wisconsin. Her responsibilities also included assisting with buying and handling most of the diamond work. Her keenness to absorb product knowledge and her flair for customer relations prepared her for her next position at Custom Creations in Madison, WI, where she worked from 1989 to 1993. Here she assumed responsibility for sales, buying, and preparation work for custom jewelry design and manufacture. For the next 6 years, Brenda worked outside the jewelry industry. Her love of the jewelry industry called her back in 1999, and soon after earning her Graduate Gemologist degree in residence from GIA, she was hired as a Resident Instructor at GIA’s World Headquarters Campus in Carlsbad, CA. Brenda has taught at several of GIA’s international campuses including London, Italy, India and Hong Kong. In 2003, Brenda was the recipient of the coveted GIA staff of the year award.
